Reasons for Female Infertility and Their Symptoms

According to statistics, about ten percent of married couples who are still able to reproduce deal with pregnancy problems, out of which about thirty percent is infertility problems in women. The other thirty percent of problem is in men and the remaining forty percent is from conditions in both the man and woman.

Infertility is the biological inability of a person to play a role in conception. The inability of a woman to carry a full term pregnancy is also referred to as infertility. If a couple engages in unprotected sex for about six months to a year and the woman does not conceive, the situation can be due to infertility. Infertility is of two types, one is permanent infertility where, in which a woman cannot conceive and the other is secondary infertility is where a woman cannot conceive after a miscarriage or full term pregnancy.

The first reason for infertility is problems with ovulation. This is when one or two reproductive parts fail to function well. The reproductive system is made up of the genital organs, thyroid glands, adrenal gland, pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Ovary problems can result in infertility when they fail to produce adequate amounts of progesterone. When this happens, a miscarriage is likely to occur because the uterus is unable to hold the fetus. Another reason is endometriosis which is a condition in which the tissue found in the uterus lining grows in the outer area of the uterus usually in the abdominal pelvic cavity.The common symptoms of endometriosis are painful intercourse, painful menstrual periods and pelvic pain.

However, some women do not experience any endometriosis symptoms. Another reason for female infertility is when the hypothalamus fails to secrete the hormone that triggers ovulation. When this happens, ovulation does not take place meaning that the ovaries do not release ova. The other common cause of infertility in women is pelvic inflammatory disease. This disease is caused by bacteria and it can cause infections in certain parts of the reproductive system, parts of the intestine and the appendix.The common area affected by pelvic inflammatory disease is the fallopian tubes. The causes of pelvic inflammatory diseases are many including pelvic tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, non-sterile abortions, herpes virus and a ruptured appendix. Poor ovum quality is the other reason for female infertility. The quality of ova decreases in women in their late thirties and early forties. The quality decreases due to abnormalities in the chromosomes and they cannot be fertilized. The other cause of female infertility is polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a condition  in which the female body produces large quantities of male hormones especially testosterone.The ovaries of women affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome usually contain small cysts. Common symptoms of this syndrome include excessive weight gain, acne, and infrequent menstrual cycle.

The other reason for infertility in women is blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. In this condition, the movement of ova is hampered in addition to preventing sperms from reaching the ovum. Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes are caused by sexually transmitted infections, previous sterilization surgery and pelvic inflammatory diseases.
